What to look for in a mover?
Choosing the right mover is a difficult process and we know how stressful it can get. So we have put together a few tips for you as a valued customer to follow through in your search for the perfect mover.
First, you would need to call the American Moving and Storage Association to see if the company is a member or you can go to their website at www.moving.org.
To check for King Vanlines you can go directly into http://www.promover.org/NewMoving/COIC/cert_Moverlist_I.html
*The American Moving and Storage Association is a non-profit trade association which serves as an educational foundation for the moving and storage. Their mission is to represent and enhance the Domestic and International Moving and Storage Industry
Next, you would need to find a mover that is not only a member but is also a certified mover. You may locate this company under the certified mover’s program on their website.
What is a Certified Mover and Why Is it Important That I Should Hire one?
A certified mover is a company that have agreed to follow the industry Code of Conduct by performing quality moves and responding to customer complaints in a timely and ethical manner. This company has also voluntarily agreed to participate by committing to provide their customers with efficient and reliable interstate households goods transportation and storage , a professional level of service, and prompt complaint handling and dispute resolution.
AMSA Certified Movers have agreed to provide complete disclosure of moving information, written estimates of charges, timely service, and prompt response to claims and complaints from their customers. Movers who do not respond to complaints or who fail to meet the other requirements of the program are removed from their website, and if they fail to improve their performance, removed from the program entirely as quoted by AMSA.
Also when you are choosing a company off course the relocation consultant must be a knowledgeable representative. The relocation consultant is the first step in building the customers a moving estimate and getting them started.
You would also want to check to see if the representative is also a certified moving consultant.
A certified moving consultant is one whom has received a certified moving consultant credential by passing an exam and has signed a code of Ethics and Professional Standards.
When you are working with a CMC you can assure that you are working with a knowledgeable sales consultant who is committed in providing excellent and fair service.
You can go directly to this website and enter the state code of the company at http://moving.org/Article/CMCList.asp
to check if your representative is a Certified Moving Consultant.
What Else Can I do To check up on Moving Companies.
You would need to check next with the Better Business Bureau to see how many complaints a company has for the past three years of business. To see if the complaints were even resolved or settled by the company.
You can check for King Vanlines at the BBB for an updated report
King Van Lines is published under our own tariff which is comparable to the 400N Tariff - the tariff for Household Goods Carrier’s Bureau.
What is the tariff?
- A tariff is a publication which contains any or all of the following: rates, charges, classifications, rules and regulations.
- The tariff does not make provisions for the shipment of explosives and hazardous materials. Any hazardous materials will have to get transported in other means. The tariff also makes allowances for the shipment of living plants. Plants may be shipped if relocation is less than 150 miles, no storage is involved and the plants require no in transit maintenance.
What Items Can I not Transport?
Below is a partial list of items that would not be acceptable for a mover to transport long distance.
- *Bleach
- *House Paints
- *Open containers of liquid
- *Propane tanks or cans
- *Gas or oils
- *Butane
- *Ammunition
- *Open alcohol containers
- *Open non sealed food containers
- *Aerosols
- *Fire extinguishers
- *Welding gas
- *Antifreeze
- *Disinfectant cleaners (especially those that contain bleach or ammonia)
- *Perishable foods (unless the move meets strict guidelines-please check with your carrier about these to see if you move meets the guidelines)
- *Items with excessive odor
- *Perishable foods
- *Propane
- *Wine
As a general rule, if the item is flammable, combustible or explosive it should not be included in the move.
How to Prepare for Propane Tanks and BBQ Grills.
On the bottom are suggestions of what to do with the propane tanks, barbeque grill and items with oil fluids inside that may leak out during transportation. Also what can be left in dresser drawers.
A suggestions on the propane tank would be to return it to the place of purchase for a partial refund or to turn it into an exchange service for credit on a new tank once the customers have reached their destination.
As for the grill itself, should be cleaned and checked for gypsy moths if they are in an area that is infected.
For the items with oil fluids such as a motorcycle, lawn mower push and a ride mower or any machinery that operates with oil. They must be drained completely before it can be moved. If assistance is needed with the draining of oil please advise your relocation consultant.
Regarding the question that almost every customer would ask would be what can be left in the dresser drawers?
If the shipment is moving directly to destination and is not going into storage, it is acceptable to leave non breakable goods in drawers (clothes, papers, etc). You will need to check with your mover on their policy as well.
